All 6 individual campsites in the state park are located along the Back Country trail and are hike-in backcountry, primitive sites; there is no car-camping.The terrain is rugged and can be challenging. Camping is allowed with a reservation and permit at 6 backpack camping sites along the trail. All campsites must be reserved in advance, which can be made as late as the same day, although we recommend making your reservation prior to your park visit, as cellular service is not reliable in the park. fee is charged for all campsites, and campers must have a reservation number for their camping permit.There are no facilities. .The Back Country Trailhead is located at 5564 Meat Camp Road, Todd, NC 28684. Groupsite B is nestled within a hollow surrounded by mountains to include Elk Knob, Snake Mountain and The Peak. The site is fully exposed to sunlight and provides little shade.
Elk Knob State Park is known for its spectacular hiking trails and vistas from the summit of Elk Knob. Trout fishing is permitted within the headwaters of the New River and posted trout waters exist adjacent to park property. Bird watching is popular as the park is home to the Golden-winged Warbler.
Plan B country store is a ten minute drive from the park and will provide small food items. Lowes Food is a fifteen minute drive to Boone from the park and will offer additional camping related items. The closest restaurant is in Boone.
The only associated facility is the pit privy which is located centrally between the two group sites.
Elk Knob State Park offers four hiking trails totaling 5.5 miles. The park also offers a zone camp, three primitive backpack family campsites, a picnic area, an amphitheater, a park office and gift shop. Educational programs are offered most weekends.
